Government House

Government House is the official residence and office of the Governor of the US Virgin Islands, a neoclassical building on Government Hill that has served in an official capacity since the Danish colonial period. The yellow and white facade, with its columned entrance and formal gardens, looks across the harbour and the town — the views from the terrace are among the best in Charlotte Amalie.

The building is not always open to the public, but the exterior and the surrounding Government Hill neighbourhood are worth a walk. The area above Main Street, with its painted wooden houses, old churches, and steep alleys, has a residential character entirely different from the tourist-oriented district below. The Frederick Lutheran Church nearby is one of the oldest churches on the island, a modest building with a long history as the congregation of the Danish colonists.
