Rada Tilly is the small beach resort 12km south of Comodoro, connected by a direct road along the coast. The beach is genuinely beautiful — a long crescent of dark sand on the Atlantic, with clear water and the wild character that Patagonian beaches tend to have. It is the best reason to spend an extra day in Comodoro, and on calm afternoons the contrast between the wind-battered industrial city and this quiet bay is striking.
The area is also one of the more accessible spots in southern Argentina for seeing Magellanic penguins during the breeding season (roughly September to March). A small colony nests on the point south of the beach. The town itself is a quiet residential community with a handful of restaurants and cafes; it functions as a weekend retreat for Comodoro's residents, and on Saturday afternoons it has a relaxed, unhurried atmosphere that the parent city does not.
