Miraflores

A quiet residential neighbourhood east of the centre, home to Hernando Siles stadium and comfortable plazas.

Miraflores sits east of the city centre on relatively flat ground, which in La Paz already makes it feel calmer than the terraced commercial districts above and below it. It's a middle-class residential neighbourhood — apartments, small shops, modest restaurants, pharmacies, parks where people sit in the afternoon — without the density or noise of the centre. The main draw for visitors is Hernando Siles Stadium, the enormous football ground at 3,637 metres that has become notorious internationally for the altitude disadvantage it poses to visiting teams. On days when neither Bolívar nor The Strongest are playing, the stadium sits quietly in the neighbourhood like a large dormant animal.

Plaza Tejada Sorzano in front of the stadium is pleasant on a weekday afternoon: trees, benches, vendors selling anticuchos from small grills. Miraflores also has the La Paz Zoo, which is worth knowing about if you're travelling with children — it has a decent collection of Bolivian wildlife including spectacled bears, vicuñas, and condors, and admission is cheap. The neighbourhood is best reached by taxi from the centre; it's not far by distance but the roads between here and the city centre are congested during the day.
