Casa Cardozo Velásquez

The house and studio of sculptor Agustín Cardozo Velásquez is one of the more unusual sights in Oruro. The sculptor dedicated his career to making stone spheres — perfect spheres of all sizes, from marble-sized to boulder-sized — and built them into every surface of his home. The effect is something between a gallery and an architectural folly.

The museum displays his spheres alongside other sculptures and documents his life and work. It is the kind of place that Atlas Obscura correctly identifies as odd and worthwhile: unexpected, specific, and the product of genuine dedication rather than tourist calculation. Small admission fee.

A story
The sculptor Agustín Cardozo Velásquez spent decades creating thousands of stone spheres of varying sizes, then incorporated them throughout his home as architectural elements — floors, walls, garden features. The result is less a house than a total environment, the product of one person's sustained obsession. He made the house a museum and left it to the city.
