Museu de História do Pantanal

Address Rua Manoel Cavassa 275, Porto Geral, Corumbá

The Museu de História do Pantanal — known locally as MUHPAN — tells the story of one of the world's great natural environments from the perspective of the humans who have lived in and around it. The building itself is a 19th-century waterfront warehouse, part of the Porto Geral complex that once made Corumbá one of the most important ports in South America.

Exhibits trace 10,000 years of human presence in the Pantanal region, from pre-Columbian indigenous cultures through the arrival of Spanish and Portuguese explorers, the Paraguayan War, and the development of the cattle and fishing economy. There are displays on the Pantanal's extraordinary biodiversity alongside artefacts from the river trade era. Opening hours are weekday mornings and afternoons; confirm locally as these can change.

A story
The museum is housed in the former Wanderley, Baís & Cia commercial warehouse, built in 1876 during Corumbá's boom years as South America's third-largest river port. The same building later hosted the 14th agency of Banco do Brasil. Finding 10,000 years of Pantanal human history in a 19th-century customs warehouse feels entirely appropriate.
