Pantanal Boat Trips

The defining activity in Corumbá is a boat trip into the Pantanal — the vast seasonally flooded wetland that surrounds the city and constitutes one of the world's greatest wildlife habitats. Tours range from half-day outings on the Paraguay River to multi-day expeditions staying at remote fazendas (ranches) deep in the wetlands, where jaguars, giant otters, capybaras, and hundreds of bird species can be seen at close range.

The dry season between May and September offers the best wildlife sightings — animals concentrate around shrinking water sources, roads are passable, and boat navigation is more predictable. In the wet season (November to March) the Pantanal floods spectacularly, which is its own kind of beauty, but access is more complicated. Most operators have offices along the Porto Geral waterfront and can arrange transport from the city to fazendas or embark directly from the riverside docks.
