A neoclassical theatre completed in 1850 and rebuilt after a fire later that century. It is the most architecturally important building in the central Praça da República, with a colonnaded facade fronting a generous open square shaded by mango trees.
The theatre still hosts a regular programme of classical concerts, plays, and ballet. Even without a ticket, the surrounding square is worth wandering for the architecture, the cluster of governmental palaces, and the relative quiet at the centre of the city.
