Teatro Municipal Carlos Gomes

The Teatro Municipal Carlos Gomes is one of the finest 19th-century theatres in the interior of São Paulo state. Built in the Italian neoclassical style and opened in 1850, it seats around 900 and still functions as the main venue for concerts, opera, and theatre performances in the city. The façade is pleasingly austere, and the interior has the horseshoe balconies and painted ceiling panels that the period demanded.

Guided tours of the interior run on certain mornings; check the theatre's website for the current schedule. The square in front — Praça Carlos Gomes — is shaded by large trees and is a reasonable place to sit with a coffee between errands. It's a small but pleasant public space in what is otherwise a fairly utilitarian city centre.

A story
Antônio Carlos Gomes was born in Campinas in 1836 and became the first composer from the Americas to achieve international recognition in European opera. His opera "Il Guarany" — based on a Brazilian novel about an indigenous warrior and a Portuguese nobleman's daughter — premiered at La Scala in Milan on 19 March 1870 to a standing ovation. He never returned to live in Brazil, but Campinas named its municipal theatre after him and placed his statue in the square outside.
