Ruins of the Old Aqueduct

A short, flat walk inland from Abraão along the Aqueduto trail brings you to the ruins of a nineteenth-century stone aqueduct, built to bring fresh water down from the hills to supply the leper colony that occupied this side of the island. The arches have been swallowed by forest, vines and roots taking apart the masonry one stone at a time, and the whole thing has a quietly atmospheric feel.

The trail continues past a small waterfall (Cachoeira da Feiticeira), where you can swim in a cold mountain pool surrounded by ferns. The walk and a dip take about two hours round trip from Abraão, making this one of the easiest forest outings on the island.
