Capela do Padre Faria

Oldest church in town, founded by one of the original bandeirante prospectors

A small whitewashed chapel on the eastern edge of town, founded around 1701 by Padre João de Faria Fialho — one of the bandeirantes from São Paulo who first found gold here. It is the oldest surviving church in Ouro Preto and a contrast to the soaring baroque elsewhere: low, simple, almost rustic.

The interior is darker and more intimate than the famous churches. Faded gilding, painted wooden saints, and a small bell tower with a bell brought from Portugal in 1750. Few visitors come this far up — it is a thirty-minute walk from Praça Tiradentes — but the lane up to it is one of the prettiest in town.
