Nossa Senhora do Pilar is the old mother church of São João del Rei and still feels like the city's religious centre. From the outside it is comparatively restrained; inside, the gilded altars and carved detail give the full Minas Gerais baroque effect.
It sits in the walkable historic centre, close to other churches and the old bridges. Visit it with São Francisco de Assis rather than treating each church as a separate errand.
