São João del Rei is one of the great historic towns of Minas Gerais, but it feels more lived-in than museum-polished. Baroque churches rise above a working town centre, bells still mark the day, and stone bridges and steep lanes keep the old colonial shape visible.
The city is often paired with nearby Tiradentes, and that is fair, but São João has enough of its own weight for a full day. São Francisco de Assis Church is the showpiece, Nossa Senhora do Pilar Cathedral gives you the gilded heart of the old town, and the heritage railway keeps the region's rail history moving rather than locked in a display case.
It is a good place to slow down. Walk between churches, listen for the bells, cross the bridges over the Lenheiro stream, and leave time for the train if it is running.
