Itaipu Dam

Colossal hydroelectric dam powering two countries

A joint Brazilian-Paraguayan venture, Itaipu is one of the world's largest hydroelectric dams. The electricity it generates powers the entire country of Paraguay and much of southern Brazil. The dam sits on the Paraná River — a different river from the Iguaçu — but its construction flooded the former Sete Quedas (Guaíra Falls), which were once the world's largest waterfall by volume. Free guided tours take visitors through the enormous structure.
