The "Outer Beach" runs along the Atlantic side of the island's southern half, a long stretch of fine sand with steady surf and almost nobody on it. It is the best beach on Ilha do Mel for swimming and for surfing — small surf schools in Encantadas rent boards by the hour and run beginner lessons.
The walk from Encantadas through the dunes takes about 20 minutes. Bring water and shade; there are no facilities along the beach. The southern end towards the Gruta das Encantadas is the quietest stretch.
