Castelo de Laje

The Castelo de Laje is a castle-like building constructed between 1917 and 1919 by Henrique Laje, one of the most powerful industrialists in early 20th-century Brazil. Laje made his fortune from coal mining, salt transport, and docking operations across southern Brazil; the castle was built as a summer residence in a style influenced by Swiss and German Alpine architecture — a visual statement of European ambition in the middle of the Atlantic Forest.

The main residence has a circular tower with a viewing platform, a large reception terrace, a bandstand, and terraced gardens. It is listed as a historic monument and has been preserved by the municipality; the grounds are open and serve as a leisure and events venue. There is a small museum inside about the history of the Laje family and the industrial development of the region.
