Geological Museum of the Serra do Rio do Rastro

The Geological Museum of the Serra do Rio do Rastro is a small municipal museum dedicated to the geology and mining history of the Lauro Müller region. The collection includes rock samples from the coal seams, fossils from the Permian period found in the local formations, and exhibits on the history of coal extraction in the area — including information about the British-run mines that operated here from 1842.

The museum provides useful context for the landscape around Lauro Müller, which is shaped by the same Gondwana-era geology that produced the coal seams. It is small and informal, but the staff tend to be knowledgeable and engaged. Admission is free or low cost.
