The Universidade Estadual de Londrina (UEL) is one of the major public universities in Paraná, with around 18,000 students on a large campus about 5km from the city centre. Founded in 1970, it has grown into a comprehensive institution covering medicine, law, engineering, sciences, and the arts.
The campus itself is worth visiting: it has an art museum (Museu de Arte de Londrina), a natural history museum, and pleasant grounds with trees and open spaces. The various museums are free and accessible to visitors; the art museum in particular has a good collection of Brazilian art. The campus is also the hub of the city's student life — cafes, bookshops, and cheap restaurants cluster around its edges.
