The Pomerode Zoological Garden sits right in the centre of town, making it one of the most conveniently placed zoos in Brazil. Founded in 1932, it is also one of the oldest in the country and houses over 600 animals representing more than 120 species, with a focus on native Atlantic Forest fauna alongside species from elsewhere in South America and beyond.
The zoo is compact and walkable in a couple of hours. Highlights include the native species section, where you can see maned wolves, tapirs, peccaries, and a range of Brazilian primates in relatively spacious enclosures. The bird collection is strong, with toucans, macaws, and various birds of prey from the Atlantic Forest. Entry prices are low by Brazilian standards, and the combination of the zoo with a walk through the surrounding half-timbered streets makes for a full and enjoyable half-day.
