Morro da Igreja

Morro da Igreja is the highest peak in Santa Catarina, standing at 1,822 metres and offering views across the highland plateau and — on clear days — all the way to the sea. The peak is reached by a road that climbs through Araucaria forest and then opens onto exposed rocky grassland. A large concrete cross marks the summit, which is also home to a telecommunications tower.

The road to the summit is accessible by vehicle. On clear days the drive is one of the most dramatic in the Serra Catarinense — the landscape becomes progressively more austere as you climb, the pines giving way to wind-bent scrub and then bare rock. In winter the grass here whitens with frost overnight. The summit is inside the national park, and an entry fee applies.

A story
At 1,822 metres, Morro da Igreja is the highest point in Santa Catarina. On winter mornings the temperature can drop below -10°C and ice crystalises on the grass and rocks around the summit. In a country where most people live near the coast and never experience frost, this is close to an extreme environment — and Brazilians treat it as such.
