The Ruinas de Huanchaca are the massive stone remains of a nineteenth-century silver refinery, standing like a desert fortress on the southern side of Antofagasta. Their scale hints at the industrial wealth that transformed the coast during the mining and nitrate boom, while the roofless walls make a dramatic contrast with the Atacama light.
The site also has museum interpretation, so it works as more than a quick photo stop. Visit late in the day if possible, when the sun brings out the texture of the masonry and the ruins feel most connected to the surrounding desert.
