Laguna Chaxa

Laguna Chaxa is the classic flamingo stop on the Salar de Atacama. A boardwalk crosses rough salt crust to shallow water where Andean, Chilean, and James's flamingos often feed with volcanoes behind them.

It is beautiful, but not a zoo. Wildlife sightings depend on season, water levels, and luck. Go quietly, stay on the trail, and give yourself time to watch the birds move.

A story
Laguna Chaxa sits inside Los Flamencos National Reserve, where three flamingo species feed in brine rich with tiny crustaceans. The birds look delicate, but this is a harsh mineral world where almost every living thing is adapted to salt, glare, and wind.
