Feria de Chillán

The Feria de Chillán is one of the largest and best outdoor markets in central Chile. Spread across several blocks in the city centre, it operates daily and sells everything from fresh produce and meat to leather goods, woven textiles, ceramics, and household tools. The market has a more working character than most tourist markets — the vendors are there for local customers, not for visitors — which is exactly what makes it worth visiting.

The leather section is particularly strong. Chillán has a tradition of saddlery and leatherwork that goes back to the huaso cattle culture of the Ñuble valley. You can find well-made belts, bags, and riding gear at reasonable prices. The food section is dense with local specialities: longaniza sausages, queso de cabeza (head cheese), chancho en piedra (tomato and chilli relish), and sweet sopapillas fried to order.

A story
The longaniza chilloneja — the local sausage — is the most famous product of the Feria. Made with pork, cumin, and chilli, it is smoked and sold fresh in long coils. Butchers from Chillán have supplied it to restaurants in Santiago for generations, and it remains one of the dishes Chileans associate most strongly with their national food culture.
