Museo Claudio Arrau León

The Museo Claudio Arrau León is a small museum in Chillán dedicated to the city's most celebrated native son: the pianist Claudio Arrau (1903–1991), widely considered one of the great interpreters of the Romantic repertoire. The museum occupies a house in the city centre and displays personal memorabilia, photographs, concert programs, and recordings from across Arrau's extraordinary career.

Arrau left Chillán as a child prodigy and built his reputation in Europe and New York over seven decades. The museum gives a sense of the scale of his achievement and the unusual relationship between this provincial Chilean city and a musician who became a global figure. For classical music lovers it is worth a visit; for others it is a brief but interesting detour.

A story
Claudio Arrau was born in Chillán in 1903 and gave his first public concert at age five. By his death in 1991 he was considered one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century, particularly renowned for his interpretations of Beethoven, Brahms, and Chopin. He rarely returned to Chile after leaving for Berlin at age seven to study with one of Liszt's pupils.
