Coquimbo is effectively part of the La Serena urban area. Local buses, colectivos, and taxis connect the two cities, and long-distance buses on the Pan-American Highway stop in or near Coquimbo.
If you are already staying in La Serena, do not overcomplicate it: come for the day, then return along the bay.
