Iglesia Sagrado Corazón

Hilltop wooden church modelled on a Black Forest original

The Iglesia del Sagrado Corazón — the Sacred Heart Church — sits on the small hill above the town centre and is the most photographed building in Puerto Varas. It was built between 1915 and 1918 by German Capuchin friars and modelled on the Marienkirche in the Black Forest village of Marienthal, complete with twin octagonal towers and a steeply pitched red roof.

The interior is unexpectedly polychrome — pale blue ceilings, gilded altars, and stained glass made by craftsmen in the Black Forest. It is open daily and free to enter. Climb the few steps from the Plaza de Armas to reach it; the view back down to the lake from the church door is excellent.
