Rancagua is a good base for some of central Chile's better day trips. Sewell and the El Teniente mine to the east are the headline excursions, both accessed only on licensed tours. The Cachapoal Valley wineries lie immediately south, with cellar doors open at Casa Silva, Anakena, and Viu Manent (technically just over the line in Colchagua). For nature, the Reserva Nacional Río de los Cipreses preserves a stretch of cypress-clad Andean canyon south of town, with hiking trails into condor country.
