Adobe

The open fire at Caracoles 211 that everybody in town ends up sitting round at some point.

Adobe is the social centre of San Pedro and has been for twenty years. A courtyard behind an adobe wall on Caracoles, with a fire pit burning in the middle of it from late afternoon onwards and tables arranged in rings around the heat. Once the sun goes down the temperature in this town drops off a cliff, and the fire is not decorative.

It works as a café in the daytime — espresso, cakes, people using the wifi and comparing notes on which tour agency lied to them — and as a bar in the evening, with a long list of pisco sours including one made with rica-rica. The food is fine rather than the reason to come; eat elsewhere and arrive after.

It is the obvious place, and obvious in San Pedro means crowded from about eight. Go early if you want a seat near the fire, or go late and stand.
