Cerro Toco

High but non-technical volcano ascent near San Pedro, popular for first-time 5,600-metre summit attempts.

Cerro Toco is one of the more accessible big-altitude climbs around San Pedro de Atacama. Vehicles can usually get high on the mountain, leaving a relatively short, non-technical ascent to a summit above 5,600 metres with huge views toward Licancabur, Bolivia, and the Atacama basin.

The word "accessible" should not be confused with easy. The altitude is the whole challenge, and you should acclimatise in San Pedro before trying it. With a responsible guide and a realistic pace, Cerro Toco is a memorable way to feel the thin air of the high Andes.
