The Kunstmann Brewery in Torobayo, about 4 kilometres south of central Valdivia, is the best-known producer of German-style beer in Chile and one of the country's most visited breweries. The visitor centre, beer garden, and restaurant occupy a purpose-built complex with views over the surrounding countryside, and the guided tours explain the German immigration history and the brewing process before delivering you to the tasting room.
The beer itself is genuinely good — particularly the Torobayo dunkel (dark lager) and the Lager. The restaurant attached to the brewery serves German-Chilean food: sauerkraut, smoked meats, kuchen (the German-style cake that has become a fixture of southern Chilean cuisine), and good grilled fish. The beer garden is pleasant on a summer afternoon. Tours can be booked in advance; the restaurant operates without a reservation. There is no regular public transport to the brewery from the city centre — taxis or cycling the river path are the easiest options.
