Museo de la Esmeralda

Small museum showcasing Colombian emerald mining and gemology

A compact museum in Cartagena's walled city dedicated to Colombia's emerald industry. The exhibits walk you through the geology of emerald formation, the history of mining in Boyaca province, and the craft of cutting and grading stones. It is run by Caribe Jewelry, so there is a commercial angle — the exit leads through a showroom — but the museum portion itself is genuinely informative and free to enter.

Colombia produces roughly 70% of the world's emeralds, and this is one of the better places to understand why before you start haggling in the shops along Calle de las Bóvedas.
