Playa Marbella

Local beach north of the city walls, popular with families

Playa Marbella sits just north of the city walls on the Caribbean side, roughly 10 minutes on foot from the Las Bóvedas end of the walled city. It's used mainly by locals and is significantly less crowded than Bocagrande. The sand is cleaner and the water calmer than the main tourist beaches. Palms fringe the shore and there are a few simple beach bars selling cold beer and fried fish.

Marbella is the best beach within walking distance of the old city and a sensible choice for anyone who wants a quick swim without getting on a boat or a bus. On weekend afternoons it fills with Cartagena families; weekday mornings you can have long stretches to yourself.
