Plaza de la Trinidad

Getsemaní's lively central square, busy every evening

Plaza de la Trinidad is the heart of Getsemaní, the neighbourhood outside Cartagena's walled city. On weekday evenings and especially on weekends, the square fills spontaneously with locals — people sitting on the church steps, vendors selling snacks and beer from coolers, children playing football, and the steady sound of vallenato and champeta music from somewhere nearby.

It's the most authentically local social scene in Cartagena, and a genuine contrast to the more polished bars of the walled city. The church of Santísima Trinidad faces the square and provides a backdrop of colonial stonework. Several good, unpretentious bars and restaurants cluster around the edges. Getting here on foot from the Torre del Reloj takes about 5 minutes.
