Malecón sobre el Magdalena

The malecón runs along the west bank of the Magdalena through Honda's historic centre, giving a long, open view of the river that is quite different from the enclosed streets of the colonial core. The Magdalena here is wide, slow, and the colour of milky coffee. Fishermen work the banks in the early morning, and the occasional motor launch passes heading upstream or down.

This is the best place to sit with a cold drink in the evening and watch the light change over the water. The heat that makes Honda uncomfortable during the middle of the day becomes more tolerable by the river after five o'clock. A few vendors sell fruit and snacks along the walkway, and locals come out for the evening paseo that seems to happen in every Colombian town regardless of how hot the day has been. The malecón also gives you a clear view back toward the stone bridge, which looks its best from here at dusk.

A story
The Magdalena River is Colombia's longest and was for centuries its most important waterway. Honda marked the furthest upstream point that ocean-going vessels and large river craft could reach before the Vuelta de Honda rapids blocked the way. Everything — contraband silver, Jesuit missionaries, independence fighters, Alexander von Humboldt on his famous 1801 expedition — came through this stretch of river.
