Jardín Botánico de Cali

The Jardín Botánico de Cali — despite its name, located in Palmira, not Cali — is the main reason to stop here. Spread across a large flat site with established tropical trees, the garden has a strong collection of native Colombian flora including palms, heliconias, bromeliads, and one of the best orchid sections in the country, with over 1,000 species. The orchid pavilion is the highlight, particularly between November and January when the largest number of species are in bloom.

The garden is peaceful on weekdays, busier with families from Cali and Palmira on weekends. A small café operates near the entrance. The layout is informal rather than formal — more like a research station with paths through vegetation than a manicured European botanical garden. That is part of its charm. Guided tours in Spanish can be arranged at the entrance gate.

A story
The Jardín Botánico de Cali gets its name because it was founded with funding from the city of Cali, but it has always been located within Palmira's municipal limits — a quirk of its origin that confuses visitors searching for it in Cali itself. The garden was established in 1983 on land donated by a local hacienda and has grown to include one of the most comprehensive orchid collections in Colombia, with over 1,000 registered species.
