Palmira

Valle del Cauca city in sugar-cane country, known as Colombia's agricultural capital.

Palmira is a mid-sized city in the Valle del Cauca, just 25 km south of Cali and easily reached by frequent buses. Known as the agricultural capital of Colombia, it sits in the heart of sugar cane country — the flat, fertile valley floor stretches out to the Andes on both sides.

The city is pleasant and walkable, with a lively central plaza and the Parque del Azúcar reflecting its sugar heritage. Most travellers pass through on the way to or from Cali, but the Jardín Botánico de Cali — which is actually in Palmira despite its name — is worth a stop, with an excellent collection of tropical plants and orchids. The Hacienda Piedechinche outside town is a well-preserved colonial sugar estate that tells the story of the industry that built the entire valley.

Activities

Palmira sits in the Cauca valley east of Cali, and the reason it appears here is the ridge behind it: Colombia's best-known paragliding site, flown year-round.

Getting There

Palmira is served by the Alfonso Bonilla Aragón International Airport, located between Palmira and Cali roughly 10 km from Palmira's centre. Despite its "International" designation, most flights here are domestic — the airport is Cali's main airport and handles connections to Bogotá, Medellín, Cartagena, and other Colombian cities. International connections to Miami and Panama City also operate from here.

From the airport to Palmira centre, taxis are the practical option. Frequent buses connect Palmira to Cali (about 45 minutes, leaving from the Terminal de Transportes in each city). The journey costs very little and buses run throughout the day and into the evening.
