Balneario Hurtado

The Balneario Hurtado is a stretch of the Río Guatapurí in the foothills north of Valledupar where the water runs clear and cold over clean river stones and local families come to swim on weekends. There are food stalls, hammocks strung between the trees, and the kind of easy afternoon that Colombian leisure culture does better than almost anyone.

It is a genuine local spot rather than a tourist attraction, which makes it more appealing. Weekends are busy; arriving early secures the better spots under the trees. The drive up from the city through the foothills is pleasant in itself, with views back over the valley and the Sierra Nevada behind.

A story
The Guatapurí comes down from the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta carrying melt water from the permanent snowfields on Pico Simón Bolívar — at 5,700 metres, the highest point in Colombia. The water is correspondingly cold even in the lowland heat of Valledupar, which is why Colombians drive hours to swim here.
