Festival de la Leyenda Vallenata

Every April, Valledupar fills with musicians, dancers, and crowds from across Colombia for the Festival de la Leyenda Vallenata — the largest and most prestigious vallenato competition in the world. Four categories of musician compete over five days: accordionists, drum players, guacharaca (scraper) players, and full ensembles. The winners of the accordion competition are treated as national heroes.

The festival takes place at the Parque de la Leyenda Vallenata on the edge of the city. Alongside the competition stages there are concerts, street performances, and an atmosphere that is unlike almost any other music festival in South America. If you plan to attend, book accommodation months in advance — the city fills completely.

A story
The festival was founded in 1968 by writer Gabriel García Márquez, journalist Consuelo Araújonoguera, and Governor Alfonso López Michelsen — a deliberate attempt to preserve and elevate a musical form that was then considered lower-class and rural. García Márquez, who grew up in the region and heard vallenato as a child, later described it as "the most faithful expression of our life." UNESCO added it to the Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2015.
