The house where Juan Montalvo was born in 1832 has been preserved as a museum and is one of Ambato's most important cultural sites. Montalvo is considered one of the finest prose stylists in 19th-century Latin American literature — his essays attacking political tyranny and clerical power made him enemies in high places, but cemented his reputation across the continent.
The museum displays Montalvo's personal effects, manuscripts, and correspondence, as well as a library of his works. Even visitors unfamiliar with his writing tend to find the house evocative — a fine colonial building around a quiet courtyard, with a garden.
The house is a short walk from Plaza Juan Montalvo in the city centre. Open Tuesday to Sunday, typically 9am to 5pm. Small admission fee.
