Parque Cevallos is Ambato's main civic park, a pleasant tree-shaded square a couple of blocks from the cathedral. It is the social heart of the city in the early evenings, when families walk, vendors sell roasted corn and cotton candy, and shoe shiners set up along the paths.
The park is not particularly distinguished in itself, but it is a useful anchor for the city centre and a good place to sit after visiting the cathedral or the Casa de Juan Montalvo. The surrounding streets have the banks, pharmacies, and bus stops that form the infrastructure of an ordinary Ecuadorian highland city — which is exactly what Ambato is, and what makes it interesting on its own terms.
The best time to visit is the late afternoon, when the light is good and the park comes to life.
