Rodeo Montuvio

The rodeo montuvio is the cultural event that most distinguishes Chone from other Manabí towns of similar size. Rooted in the traditions of the montuvio people — the rural mestizo communities of coastal Ecuador — it combines equestrian skills competitions, bull-riding, and traditional music into a festival that is entirely local in character and not designed for outside consumption.

The main events are held during the Fiestas de Cantonización in August, centred around the parque central and the nearby streets that are temporarily converted into event space. Smaller competitions take place at various points during the year. If you are in Chone during a rodeo event, the atmosphere is genuinely festive — the crowds are local, the food stalls are everywhere, and the competitions themselves are serious business for participants who have trained for months.

The event area is in and around the central square during fiesta season.

A story
The montuvio people — the mestizo farming communities of coastal Ecuador's interior — developed the rodeo montuvio as a distinct tradition from the highland-influenced vaquería. It involves bull-riding, horse skills, and competitions like the corrida de toros a campo abierto, an open-field bull run without fences, that dates to the colonial period and has no direct equivalent elsewhere in Ecuador.
