Carnival is the moment Guaranda becomes more than a quiet highland town. The celebration lasts for days, with parades, dancers, masked characters, strolling musicians, water throwing, and plenty of Pájaro Azul.
The atmosphere is festive rather than polished. If you come at Carnival, expect crowds, noise, wet clothes, and a much stronger sense of local identity than the city shows on an ordinary weekday.
