Guaranda

Small Ecuadorian highland capital known for Carnival, seven hills, Pájaro Azul, and Chimborazo views.

Guaranda is the small capital of Bolívar province, sitting high in the Ecuadorian Andes between Riobamba, Ambato, and the road down toward the coast. It calls itself the City of the Seven Hills, and on clear days Chimborazo gives the skyline real drama.

The city is best known for Carnival. Guaranda's version is one of Ecuador's big traditional celebrations: water, masks, parades, music, local food, and Pájaro Azul, the strong local aguardiente flavoured with herbs. Outside Carnival, the town is quieter and more provincial, with markets, plazas, and viewpoints rather than grand monuments.

This is a borderline but worthwhile spare-day stop if you are already moving through the central highlands. El Indio Guaranga, Cruz Loma, the Carnival tradition, and trips toward Salinas or the canyon country give it enough identity to justify a page.
