A short boat ride north of Mompiche, Isla Portete (also called Isla de Portete or Portete Beach) is a quieter alternative to the main village beach. The island has a long stretch of pale sand backed by low vegetation, with calm water that is better for swimming than the surf-exposed main beach. Boats leave from Mompiche when there are enough passengers or can be hired privately for a few dollars.
Bring your own food and water — there is no reliable infrastructure on the island, though a couple of informal comedores sometimes operate during busy weekends. The crossing takes about fifteen minutes and the boatman will arrange a pickup time. It is a good half-day trip if you want a change of scene from the village.
