The wave that put Mompiche on the map is a long left-hand point break at the northern end of the bay. On a good day it offers rides of 200 metres or more, peeling consistently along a rocky headland. The break works best from December to April when the north swells are running, though smaller waves arrive year-round. It is not a beginner wave — the rocks at the takeoff zone demand confidence — but intermediate surfers will find it rewarding.
Board rental is available in the village from a handful of shops, and a couple of local instructors offer lessons on the gentler beach break closer to town. Outside peak season you may have the point to yourself, which is increasingly rare on Ecuador's coast.
