Practical Information

Entry requirements

No visa is required for most nationalities, including citizens of the UK, EU, US, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and most of South America. Visitors are granted a one-month stay on arrival. You must show a return ticket, proof of pre-booked accommodation, evidence of sufficient funds, and comprehensive travel and medical insurance. Without insurance you will not be allowed to enter.

Currency

The Falkland Islands pound (FKP) is the local currency, pegged 1:1 to sterling. UK pounds are accepted everywhere. There are no ATMs in the Falkland Islands. The Standard Chartered Bank in Stanley can process credit card cash advances, but the process is time-consuming. Bring enough cash to cover your stay, including the airport departure tax. Cards are accepted at most hotels and larger shops in Stanley.

Health

The King Edward VII Memorial Hospital (KEMH) in Stanley has a full surgical team and qualified staff. Standards are good but facilities are limited. More complex treatment requires medical evacuation to Chile or Uruguay. Travel insurance including medical evacuation cover is mandatory.

No vaccinations are specifically required for the Falklands, but routine jabs should be up to date. There are no tropical diseases here.

Communications

Mobile coverage (Sure) works in Stanley and along main roads but not across most of the countryside or outer islands. The internet is available in Stanley at hotels and some cafes. Outer island lodges may have satellite connections. The country code is +500.

Time zone

UTC-3 year-round (no daylight saving).

Language and culture

English is the only language. The culture is distinctly British — expect familiar institutions like pubs, fish and chips, the NHS equivalent, and strong loyalty to the Crown. The Argentine sovereignty claim is a sensitive topic; avoid taking sides unless you know the person well.
