Kourou Beach

Kourou's main beach is one of the few properly equipped beaches in French Guiana — there are shaded picnic shelters, a fitness trail, and children's play areas, making it more usable than the raw coastal stretches you'll find elsewhere in the territory. The beach itself is pleasant enough, though ocean currents from the Amazon basin occasionally deposit debris along the tideline.

The view out to sea is the best thing about it: on a clear day the Îles du Salut are visible on the horizon, and during the October-to-February sea turtle nesting season the beach sees leatherback and olive ridley turtles coming ashore at night. Launch windows from the nearby space centre, visible as a rising column of light and fire to the northwest, make for a spectacular backdrop if timing coincides. The beach is busiest on weekend afternoons with Kourou families; weekday mornings are quiet.
