Église Saint-Antoine de Padoue

Small wooden church at the centre of the village

The church of Saint-Antoine de Padoue is the modest wooden chapel at the centre of Saül — built in the simple Guianese mission style, white-painted boards with a low pitched roof and a small bell tower. It serves the village's Catholic population, most of whom are descendants of the Saint Lucian gold prospectors who founded the settlement in 1937.

It is open most days during daylight hours. There is nothing extraordinary inside, but the setting — a clearing of bright sun ringed by green wall of forest — is part of why people remember the village. The church and the airstrip are the two reference points everyone in Saül uses to give directions.
