Baganara Island

Baganara Island, a short boat ride from Bartica, offers a quieter alternative to the town itself. The island has a resort with simple accommodation and access to swimming in the Essequibo — the dark, soft river water here is warm and largely free of the hazards that make Amazonian swimming questionable. The surrounding forest is good for birding, with parrots, toucans, and various species of flycatcher easily spotted.

A day trip to Baganara is a good option if you have a full day in the Bartica area and want to escape the noise and dust of the town. Arrangements can be made through the Baganara resort or through local boatmen at the waterfront.

A story
Baganara Island has a small resort built around a former farm, making it the one relatively comfortable accommodation option near Bartica. Guests come mainly for the river swimming, birding, and the general experience of sitting on an island in the middle of the Essequibo with no road access and very little to do except watch the river go by.
