Baganara

Essequibo River island near Bartica, covered in rainforest where the Essequibo and Mazaruni meet.

Baganara is a 187-acre island in the Essequibo River, a few kilometres south of Bartica at the point where the Essequibo and Mazaruni rivers meet. It is the largest of the hundreds of islands that dot the Essequibo and is covered in dense rainforest and tropical flowers. A small resort on the island offers accommodation and activities including boat trips, swimming, and birding in the surrounding forest.

The island makes a peaceful base for exploring the Essequibo region. Getting there is part of the journey: you take a boat from Georgetown or Parika, passing through ever-widening stretches of the great river.

Activities

Baganara is a private island rather than a public one, so getting there means either booking a night or joining an Essequibo day tour that stops for lunch. Both are arranged through the operators at Ogle rather than on the island itself.
