The Demerara River runs past Linden on its way north to the Atlantic coast at Georgetown, and the town's waterfront gives the best view of this wide, brown river in its upper reaches. The river is a working waterway — barges loaded with bauxite are a common sight — but the banks are pleasant in the early morning and evening, and the sunsets over the water can be striking.
The old colonial-era pontoon bridge across the river, which connects the two parts of the town (Mackenzie on the west bank and Wismar on the east), was a landmark of Linden for decades, though it has been replaced. Swimming in the river is popular with locals at certain points, though the current can be strong.
